Guided clinical communication practice

From Hints to Independent Practice

Lingua CoPilot Medical offers clinical communication practice with optional live coaching for nurses, doctors and operating-theatre team members. Practice with AI patients, relatives or colleagues, then try a fresh situation without hints. Educators can review what was said, what was missed and whether coaching was used.

Plan the sequence

Give each attempt a different purpose

Start with one communication behavior you want to observe. Use these stages to organize practice, allowing further attempts where needed.

  1. 01

    Find the starting point

    Baseline · coaching off

Choose a communication skill and let the learner attempt a relevant case without hints. Review the conversation and report to identify a specific behavior to practice.

What does the learner already do without support?

  2. 02

    Practice with a focus

    Guided practice · coaching on

Use an eligible practice attempt with coaching enabled. A short, timely suggestion can draw attention to a missed communication step while the learner is still in the conversation.

Which behavior needs attention in the next attempt?

  3. 03

    Try a fresh situation

    Independent attempt · coaching off

Choose another case that exercises the same skill, with a different person or concern. Review whether the learner demonstrates the behavior in their own words without a hint.

What can the learner demonstrate when the prompt is absent?

The educator chooses the sequence and cases. Coaching does not automatically fade during a session. Here, an independent attempt means a separate simulation without hints; educators decide what further practice or observation is needed.

Institutional control

Decide when coaching is available

Your educator or administrator can agree an organization-level coaching policy with Lingua CoPilot. Policy changes are currently arranged through our team.

Enable or disable coaching
Allow live hints in eligible practice sessions, or turn coaching off for the organization. Assessment-mode sessions always keep coaching off.
Let learners decide
Permit learners to switch coaching on or off before starting an eligible practice session, or keep the organization’s chosen setting fixed.
Set the starting preference
Choose whether coaching starts on or off when it is available. The coaching setting is fixed when an attempt begins; a later attempt can use a different setting.

A focus that fits your learners

Tailor coaching to your communication priorities

Coaching can be tailored to the communication behaviors your institution wants learners to practice. Lingua CoPilot can configure case-specific coaching guidance around agreed learning objectives, the learner’s role and the case’s safety boundaries.

Examples of customized coaching

Nursing practice

Check understanding before moving on

A nurse explains discharge advice to a patient or caregiver.

Look for a meaningful check of understanding. If it is missing, prompt the learner to ask the patient to explain the plan in their own words.

Doctor practice

Make room for the response to difficult news

A doctor discusses difficult news with a patient and relative.

Look for acknowledgment of emotion before further explanation. If the learner moves past a concern, prompt them to explore the patient’s response.

Operating-theatre team practice

Close the loop on a team request

A nurse, doctor or allied OT professional handles a team exchange in a role-appropriate case.

Look for clear acknowledgment and ownership of a team request. If these are missing, prompt the learner to confirm who will act and what was understood.

Live coaching is supported across all seven communication stations, in eligible practice sessions:

Learners use cases appropriate to their clinical role. Coaching availability also depends on the station, organization policy and session mode.

Make the next attempt count

Review what the learner demonstrated, and the support available

Reflect before opening the results

After each completed attempt, an optional self-guided debrief comes before the score report. The learner reflects on their reaction, a key moment in the conversation and how their words may have landed with the other person. This gives them a starting point to compare with the feedback and a behavior to revisit in the next attempt. Reflection itself does not change the score.

Review the score and evidence

The learner then opens the report to see what they demonstrated and what was not observed. Criteria are set before the session and fixed scoring rules apply across attempts: the same evidence produces the same score. Educators can compare relevant attempts, taking case difficulty and coaching status into account, and use the evidence to choose the next practice focus.

How scoring stays consistent →

Read the coaching status

Session review shows whether coaching was available, enabled and used, including the number of hints served. A served hint does not show that the learner acted on it; check their next words.

Inspect the evidence

Review learner excerpts where captured and missed steps marked not observed. A hint is guidance; the report evaluates the learner's own contribution. Hints stay out of the conversation transcript and audio.

Choose the next focus

Look at the target behavior across relevant attempts, alongside case difficulty and coaching status. Use the evidence for debrief, further rehearsal or direct observation. A single uncoached simulation does not establish real-world competence.

Questions from educators and training leads

Is live coaching available only for nurses?

No. Live coaching is supported across all seven live communication stations for role-appropriate nursing, doctor and operating-theatre team practice. Availability for a particular attempt depends on the institution’s policy, the station and session mode. The separate clinical-reasoning capability preview is currently assessment-only.

Can educators disable hints for an independent attempt?

Yes. Assessment-mode sessions always disable live coaching. Organization policy can also disable coaching in practice sessions, or allow learners to choose before they start. The setting stays fixed during each attempt.

Can we customize the coaching suggestions for our institution?

Yes. Lingua CoPilot can configure case-specific guidance around agreed communication objectives and the learner’s role. For example, you might focus on teach-back, acknowledgment of emotion or closed-loop team communication. Guidance remains within the case’s objectives and safety boundaries.

Does customized coaching change the assessment criteria?

Changing coaching guidance does not by itself change the scoring rubric or award credit. The report evaluates what the learner actually said against the case’s applicable criteria. A request for different assessment criteria needs a separate review of the case and rubric.

Can we use this approach in different languages and healthcare contexts?

Lingua CoPilot Medical supports India, United States, United Kingdom and Australia healthcare contexts, with English and nine Indian regional languages. Case and language coverage varies by station. We can help you choose cases and languages that fit your learners’ roles and the conversations they need to handle.
